( Although not widely known or publicised, the author Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936) was a pacifist fiercly opposed to the Anglo Boer War. This opposition to British Imperial expansion caused him to write the now famous poem "The Absent Minded Beggar" the first verse of which is recorded on the back of the match striker.

Look for the references to Kruger, Paul, a gentleman in khaki and Table Bay which make this item a true piece of Africana and highly prized amongst collectors of Boer War memorabilia.
