Antique Bottles

In 1870 (or somewhere thereabouts) a certain Hiram Codd, bottle manufacturer of London applied for patent rights on a revolutionary new internally stoppered bottle which, to this day bears his name. Codd bottles with different colours, closure patents and emblems / embossing are probably the third most avidly collected category (after ginger beers and lids) in South Africa and we are sure that this section will be warmly received and frequently visited by both local and overseas collectors.

South African Diggers and Collectors are extremely fortunate in that we are able to access (although rarely) bottles specifically manufactured for export / overseas market and some of which are totally unavailable anywhere else in the world.

Despite some lively debate on the subject, we have decided to include, in this listing, the very dark aqua bottles which sometimes occur in South Africa. More than 15 varieties from more than a dozen factories are recorded and to add to the mystique, not one has a makers name except for the Initials G & L or simply L on the back at the bottom. Dark Aqua bottles are also found in the UK, though there they do have bottle makers names on most. To add to the confusion some of these dark aquas are actually listed as "green"!

We are indebted to Nic Welman (not known as Coddman for nothing) and Brian White (who must have the largest collection of Coloured Codds outside of the U.K.) for their input and information. Mike Conradie and Tom Lotter will also be supplying their information and we hope so will other collectors as we will be expanding this section to become a registry of ownership of these fascinating bottles.

This preamble will be replaced, in time, by a more professional summary of the history of these unique bottles but, for now, lets get into a list of known South African Coloured Body, Coloured Collar and Coloured Marble Bottles... Enjoy!

Each bottle has been sized according to its capacity when filled to halfway up the pinch which is as close as we can establish how Codds were filled originally.

To make viewing more interesting we have arranged the Colourful Codds as follows:
Alphabetically by factory. Thereafter 1. Coloured Body, 2. Coloured Lip, 3. Coloured Marble, 4. Deep Aqua. Colour Preference = 1 blue (can there be a cobalt blue local Codd?) 2. Green and 3. Amber / Brown.
It will be exciting to see if any one factory had all 4 types in the market.

Fact File

Hiram Codd was born in 1839 and died in 1887.
Coloured Codds / lips / marbles were introduced as a quick and easy way for the mineral water manufacturer to identify his own bottles amongst those of his competitors.
In theory no two manufacturers in the same town should have had the same colours .
However we find 3 bottles from different factories with the same colour (amber) marbles: J.R. Jones, Trevenna and Mattheysen.
Codds were available in a number of sizes / capacities however the two most common are 6oz and 10oz.
S.A.'s most famous Coloured Colour Lip Codd is the Eugene S. Whyte of Cradock. Unique in that there are no known dug examples, all specimens, in mint condition emanting from their warehouse in Cradock although the bottle is embossed Reliance Patent, it is in fact an Acme Patent.
The De Hoop 10oz Hybrid with green marble was also manufactured by Cannington Shaw & Co Ld St Helens England.
